But what does it take to become a great saxophonist? Is it merely about owning and playing the instrument, or is there more to it than that? Let’s explore the qualities and attributes that distinguish great saxophonists from average ones. So, if you’re curious to know what makes a great saxophonist, then read on.

1. Practice & Dedication

It’s not enough to own and play a saxophone to become a great saxophonist; one must practice consistently and dedicate themselves to improving their skills. Consistent practice is essential for mastering any musical instrument, and the saxophone is no different. Great saxophonists dedicate countless hours to perfecting their craft through extensive practice and experimentation.

2. Musicality & Creativity

Although the saxophone is a melodic instrument, playing it goes beyond just hitting the right notes. Great saxophonists are creative and innovative in their approach to playing the instrument. They understand the nuances of music and know how to incorporate their unique style and musicality into their performances.

3. Technical Mastery

A great saxophonist must have technical mastery over the instrument, which involves learning fingering, understanding the proper breath control, and mastering the different playing techniques. Technical mastery also includes understanding the intricacies of music theory, scales, and improvisation.

4. Professionalism

Great saxophonists understand the importance of professionalism in the music industry. They are reliable, punctual, and have excellent communication skills. They also dress appropriately for performances and are respectful of their audience.

5. Passion & Commitment

Finally, a great saxophonist is someone who has a genuine passion for music and a commitment to their craft. They take pride in their work, strive to improve themselves, and are dedicated to their art. These qualities form the foundation of what makes a great saxophonist.

Becoming a great saxophonist takes time, effort, and dedication. It’s a journey that involves consistent practice, creativity, technical mastery, professionalism, and a passion for music. If you’re looking to become a great saxophonist, focus on developing these traits, and with time and effort, you’ll be on your way to achieving your goals.

Reviews

Paul was absolutely brilliant at our engagement party. We’ve heard nothing but compliments from our friends about him. He learnt all of our favourite songs and played them wonderfully. Would recommend to anyone!

Engagement Party

Paul responded to our request very quickly. Although he had Gig in the afternoon we was keen to have him play and he still travelled down a good hour + just to come and play for us. We honestly couldn’t have been happier. Any request for songs I made (most of these were less than a week to the event) he learnt and played perfectly. He made me feel at such ease with booking and responded promptly to emails. He mingled well with our party and everyone instantly warmed to him. Quick set up and will cater for any size. Everyone commented on his music and is still very much the talk of the party. We will defiantly be in contact again and hope he will be available to play again for us at some point in the future. 10 out of 10 from us. If you do decide to book you won’t be disappointed.  Again thank you so much for everything !!
