Reviews

The Ukes got the summer season off to a great start with an impressive show at Google’s Pancras Square offices in London at the beginning of June 2016!  We can’t say much more than that, but let’s just say they know how to through a party!  It was a privilege to play for them – we knocked out a collection of 50’s and 60’s classics as well some more contemporary pop tunes that really got the thing going!

“Plucking at the Heartstrings: Unravelling the Mystical History of the Ukulele Band”

Ah, the sweet melodies of a ukulele band! It’s hard to resist tapping your feet and swaying to their enchanting tunes. But have you ever wondered about the origins of this small but mighty stringed instrument? Join us on a harmonious journey as we plunge into the captivating historical depths of the ukulele and its harmonious companionship with the ukulele band.

1. A Mythical Serenade:

Legend has it that the ukulele has its origins in the realm of Polynesian gods. Strumming on strings made from the strands of a spider’s web, it is said that these celestial beings created the soothing tones of the ukulele. So next time you find yourself caught in a blissful reverie, remember, there might just be a touch of divine magic in those ukulele tunes.

2. The Portuguese Connection:

As we navigate through the timeline of the ukulele, we can’t ignore its vital connection to Portuguese immigrants. These talented musicians brought with them the braguinha, a small guitar-like instrument when they arrived in Hawaii in the late 19th century. It was from the Braguinha that the ukulele found its roots and began to bloom, eventually finding its way into the hearts and hands of many.

3. A Royal Presence:

The delightful twang of the ukulele quickly gained popularity among Hawaiian royalty. King Kalākaua, known as the “Merrie Monarch,” was an avid fan of the instrument and played it proficiently. His passion for the ukulele inspired the island’s people to embrace it as a symbol of their cultural identity. Soon, the ukulele became an integral part of social gatherings and entertainment, laying the groundwork for the rise of the ukulele band.

4. Jazz Age and All That Jazz:

Enter the Roaring Twenties! This exhilarating era witnessed the rise of jazz, and the ukulele couldn’t help but jump on the bandwagon. As the ukulele band took centre stage in the Jazz Age, its peppy strumming added a zestful flavour to the already vibrant tunes. From smoky underground speakeasies to glamorous jazz clubs, the ukulele band wove its rhythmic enchantment, becoming the quintessential sound of the era.

5. From Hawaii to the World:

The ’40s and ’50s saw the ukulele becoming a global sensation. From the iconic Arthur Godfrey TV show in the United States to the catchy melodies of George Formby in the United Kingdom, the ukulele found its way into the hearts of people far and wide. Love for the ukulele band spread like wildfire, creating a global community of strummers inviting everyone to sing along.
